Our History

In 2001 a senior in Economics at University of Pennsylvania conceived of and began BACtrack at a time when breathalyzers were only for law enforcement, and used only when it was too late. Keith Nothacker drove to California with a plan: change how the world drinks by showing them the numbers. He focused exclusively on breathalyzers and created consistent, reliable, technologically-advanced products to build BACtrack into a trusted brand now sold in 25 countries.

Keith Nothacker creates BACtrack, making it easy for anyone to easily estimate their own and others' blood alcohol content (BAC) and make informed decisions.

2004

BACtrack is the first company to obtain FDA approval to manufacture and market breathalyzers for consumer use.

2008

Mythbusters uses BACtrack products to dispel popular breathalyzer myths.

2008

Car & Driver tests breathalyzers and names BACtrack #1.

Innovations continue as BACtrack Mobile integrates with Apple Watch, making it more convenient than ever to take a BAC test.

2016

BACtrack introduces BACtrack View, the world's first smartphone-based remote alcohol monitoring system.

2016

BACtrack develops the first-ever wearable alcohol monitor, BACtrack Skyn. Skyn is awarded the grand prize in the NIH "Wearable Alcohol Biosensor Challenge" and garners worldwide media attention.

2017

BACtrack unveils two new BACtrack Skyn prototypes, a version integrated into an Apple Watch band and a standalone wearable.

2017

BACtrack partners with Colorado Department of Transportation in nation's first high visibility campaign promoting breathalyzers as tools to prevent drunk driving and DUIs.

2017

BACtrack Skyn named finalist in Fast Company’s World Changing Ideas Awards

2018

BACtrack launches next-gen BACtrack C6 and BACtrack C8 with police-grade accuracy and optional smartphone connectivity; the C8 displays a user’s ZeroLine® with every BAC result.

2019

BACtrack launches all-new app and device support for its BACtrack View remote alcohol monitoring platform.

2019

BACtrack Skyn is available for research use and incorporated into controlled studies at academic institutions across the country.
