What is the Highest Recorded %BAC?

According to CBC News Canada, a Bulgarian man holds the record for the highest BAC level ever recorded, and specifically the highest survivable BAC level.

In December 2004, a 67-year-old man in Plovdiv, Bulgaria was taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries he suffered following a car accident. The man appeared to be fine and communicated coherently with doctors, yet his BAC was recorded at 0.914%. Assuming the testing equipment was malfunctioning, doctors performed five separate lab tests to confirm the man’s BAC level.

  • Updated BAC records reflect the highest BAC ever recorded in a living person was the “Sheep Thief” in South Africa:

“Story: Of course the award for “Highest-Ever Recorded BAC for Someone Who Lived” goes to a sheep thief in South Africa. A story can’t get more country than that. According to the papers, the man was arrested driving a Mercedes-Benz Vito with a woman, five boys, and 15 sheep that had been stolen from various local farms.

He was 32 times over the legal limit."
