The goal of CDC’s Alcohol Program is to strengthen the scientific foundation for preventing excessive alcohol consumption. The CDC website provides public health surveillance data, trends, and maps; national surveys that collect information about alcohol consumption; information about alcoholism, impaired driving, and underage drinking; publications; and online tools, fact sheets, and related resources. 

The NIAAA, part of the National Institutes of Health, is the primary U.S. agency for conducting and supporting research on the causes, consequences, prevention, and treatment of alcohol abuse, alcoholism, and alcohol problems. NIAAA also disseminates research findings to general, professional, and academic audiences. Research and publications are available at www.niaaa.nih.gov.

The Global Information System on Alcohol and Health (GISAH), a WHO program, provides a detailed tool for assessing and monitoring the health status and trends related to alcohol consumption, alcohol-related harm, and policy responses in different countries. According to WHO, the harmful use of alcohol results in the death of 2.5 million people worldwide each year, and alcohol has a significant causal role in 60 different diseases. ABI (www.abionline.org) is a restaurant trade association that is “the only organization dedicated to the protection of responsible on-premise consumption of adult beverages.” ABI sponsors unbiased studies by university researchers and traffic safety experts; uses independent and government research to develop educational materials for the hospitality industry; drives educational media campaigns; participates in legislative activity; and offers ABI Server Training Program Certification to prevent the irresponsible consumption of adult beverages. 

AA (www.aa.org) is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. Dues or fees are not required for AA membership; AA is self-supporting, is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution, does not wish to engage in any controversy, and neither endorses nor opposes any causes. 

Founded in 1991 and funded by distillers, The Century Council (www.centurycouncil.org) is a national, independent, nonprofit organization that has lent its support to a number of policies and programs in the national effort to reduce drunk driving fatalities; administrative license revocation, zero tolerance for drunk drivers under 21; tougher penalties for DUI test refusal; and .08 %BAC as part of a comprehensive plan to fight drunk driving. 

  

The NHTSA is dedicated to achieving the highest standards of excellence in motor vehicle and highway safety, and works to help prevent crashes and their human and financial costs. The NHTSA website (www.nhtsa.gov) provides studies and reports, impaired driving prevention strategies, and marketing tools to support impaired driving prevention campaigns.

MADD’s mission is to stop drunk driving, support victims of drunk driving, and prevent underage drinking. MADD’s website (www.madd.org) presents drunk driving facts and statistics, prevention programs, victim services, underage drinking information, and resources including chat, message boards, and social media programs. 

The mission of the SADD is to provide students with prevention tools to deal with the issues of underage drinking, other drug use, risky and impaired driving, and other destructive decisions. The SADD website (www.sadd.org) offers teen driving research, resources, and statistics, chapter locations and contact information, a calendar of events, and an online store.

StopAlcoholAbuse.Gov provides a gateway to comprehensive research and resources on the prevention of underage drinking. Materials include research and statistics, videos, webinars, conferences, and town hall meetings, and are provided by the 15 Federal agencies of the Interagency Coordinating Committee on the Prevention of Underage Drinking (ICCPUD).

The Mayo Clinic website (www.mayoclinic.com) provides in-depth guides about hundreds of diseases and conditions related to alcohol consumption including alcoholism, alcohol intolerance, alcohol poisoning, alcoholic hepatitis, liver disease, and alcohol-related birth defects and neurodevelopmental disorder (fetal alcohol syndrome).
